We have done a lot of discussions on self awareness; what drives us, how to deal with thalassemia, following doctors advices, expressing ourselves, ... So, it's time to go bit medically aware this time. How aware are we regarding the medicines we take, blood we take... is it PCV or leukodepleted? Nat id tested or elisa tested? Which is better leukodepleted blood or using leukocyte filters? What and how our chelation works? What are the list of blood tests that we need to get done monthly, quarterly, semi annually or annually? If you haven't wondered all this yet, now is the time. Because ignorance can lead to destruction. Only you can help yourself.
Many of us thals are in their late twenties and still have no idea about whether they are getting elisa tested blood or why should they go for nat id tested blood? There are many topics untouched lying under blood transfusions and chelations. How can we make our chelations more compliant, and more effective. When to transfuse? There are many myths like exjade/asunra/ desirox should be taken on an empty stomach waiting to be burst. There are many signs which your body is giving. Know your body. Body always gives you signs, and you should learn to read them and find out what they mean. It's time to discuss with your respective doctors regarding all your queries. Its time to know your disease better if you don't know yet. In this digital age social platforms has made many doctors and experts available online, there are many forums which can at least make you aware about your own disease and its prerequisites, time to know yourself better, and time to know your disease better. The key to healthy life for a thal. lies in a good management and that can be achieved by keeping ourselves aware. One should learn how to educate self about the disease/condition ones fighting to. Thats the only way to win the battle know your weapons. Millennials are getting way better treatment but still, are we really aware of what we are taking and why we are taking? Being a millennial myself too, I never took an advantage of what I could. Once in a while revisit your past, because its there that all the best lessons lie, acknowledge your mistakes try to correct them. Re invent yourself, see what you could do for the betterment of your body. How can you know your disease better. Keep knowing your body, keep loving yourself and don't forget to chelate. - Nitya Gupta
