Being a businessman what can be a better thing to have than a constant demand that too consistently increasing. Yes, we are that demand, we are that constant chunk of sales that no business organization want to miss. And can easily exploit this 'Constant' by taking any price, sometimes under name of licensing, patents and copyrights and other times openly under monopoly. When you shop high end products after a while you get loyalty points or some bonus discounts but here they exploit your need even more and increase the prices. Its a vicious circle, pharma companies research, develop and exploit drugs to prevent, cure and treat symptoms and then they market it to recoup their huge investments and enforce the price they want, making it unbelievably expensive. And then due to greed they even increase the medicine price too, i have been using desferal since 15 years now and i have seen pricing going high only, sometimes even due to lack of availability we have bought in black too. Sometimes generics do provide some comfort but then they are also the part of same lobby they too tend to increase the prices later or sooner. Some companies that make a new drug serving certain medical problems don't launch their new drug except when the patent of the older drug expires or becomes close to expire. Examples: desferal and x-jade, x-jade and jadenu, proving the most divisive point.
Without government intervening, medicine lobby has become a mafia now, and withdrawing policy like obama care has made it more difficult for chronic illness Survivors, some companies are so powerful and influential that even governments can't keep check on them regarding their prices. We know profit is sole motive for any business organization but still pharma companies should be more empathetic towards chronic illness survivors, we are their life long consumer. In the countries where there is no provision of health insurance or any other sort of reimbursement, government should keep check on prices too and try to encourage developing generics. Keeping the hopes positive, we hope in future our pharma companies will try to be more co-operative and empathetic and will work in patients interests too. Till then keep consuming their products, don't forget to chelate and keep the demand high.- Nitya Gupta
